Vehicles will be shipped to Los Angeles (Long Beach) for our arrival in late August where drivers will collect and deliver them to our oceanside hotel. A short
burst up the Pacific Coast to Malibu will be a suitable shakedown.
The first driving day, avoiding freeways where possible, runs from the coast up to the wilderness area of Joshua Tree National Park. A higher, cooler area of the
Mojave Desert is the habitat for a variety of yucca which give the park its name. With so many national parks on the route, each vehicle should purchase an ‘America the Beautiful Pass’ which will give multiple access when required.
After a night in a Palm Desert resort hotel, we drive across the San Andreas Fault and up into the San Bernardino Forest for distant desert views from the “Rim of
the World Highway”. After Big Bear Lake, we descend to the desert and cross into Nevada for a night in a glittering Las Vegas hotel.
The sand dunes and salt pans of Death Valley – the lowest, driest ,hottest place in North America – lie in wait and must be traversed before the rally climbs to a
haven beneath an 11,000 foot peak of the Eastern Sierra Nevada range.
The ghost town of Bodie lies at the end of a dusty track. Once having 10,000 residents, this gold mining town has been left in a state of ‘arrested decay’, instead
of being turned into a theme park. After a short visit, we enter Yosemite National Park to arrive for lunch and an afternoon exploring the trails, waterfalls and granite domes of this spectacular area.
